How to Direct Groups in a Beauty Pageant

Choosing how to break up age groups or divisions in your pageant is essential for the fairness of the event. Direct your groups carefully for a well run beauty pageant.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what ages will compete in your pageant. Many local beauty pageants begin competitions for babies and continue up through high school age. College age divisions are often franchised events that are connected with a state competition that might eventually lead to well-known national contests. Decide which ages are best served by your venue and resources, as well as your expertise. Many times one director will handle the franchised preliminary competition, while another focuses on the children's groups.

  2. Step 2

Break down your total age range into categories or groups. Try to group children with no more than a three year age span. This helps keep the playing field level for all contestants. There is a big difference between a three-year old and a six-year old, so it is best to not have them compete in one group. Divide your groups by considering maturity, the wardrobe you require (short or long gowns), and the number of contestants you can reasonably expect.

  3. Step 3

Provide enough separation for your age groups. Young children with parents accompanying them need a different area for dressing than teens who will likely be dressing alone or with the help of a stylist. Older contestants need not sit through a long and tedious rehearsal with toddlers. Be considerate of your differing ages to direct them successfully.
