Hair color is a great way to freshen your look and change the way the world sees you. Making your roots match the rest of your hair once it grows out is very important. You want to use the same color and make sure it blends so you don't have a line between the new and old color. Here is a technique to help blend your color retouch.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Apply desired color to roots liberally, taking 1/2-inch sections so that all hair is saturated.

  2. Step 2

Set the timer for 10 minutes before your color is done processing.

  3. Step 3

Using a wide tooth comb, take 1-inch sections of the hair and gently run the comb from the roots through the ends. This will run small amounts of color through the mid-shaft and ends and soften the line between the new and old color.

  4. Step 4

Repeat this process through your whole head of hair.

  5. Step 5

Allow to process for the remaining 10 minutes.

  6. Step 6

    Shampoo, condition and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you like the look of roots, use a shade darker at the roots than on the ends. Then take a color brush and feather the color down randomly about 2 inches down the hair shaft. This technique will break the line and give subtle low lights down the mid-shaft.
  • Try to be as neat as possible; color can get messy quickly, and it's no fun trying to get it off your skin and clothes.
  • Be careful when sectioning the hair with the comb. If you scratch your scalp and the color gets in it, it'll burn.
