How to Fill Gaps for Curling Short Hair

Gaps develop when curling short hair due to limited hair length and the tendency of curly hair to leave space between sections during the curling process. The tighter curls tend to concentrate short hair in clumps or sections. Gaps in short hair must be filled in with nearby hair to prevent the scalp from showing through.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Drag "filler" hair from a nearby area of the head to fill in any gaps that are created. The hair can be worked into the gap using a barrel curl or other large wave-like curl.

  2. Step 2

Pull down a tendril of hair to overlay the gap. This method works well if the neighboring areas have not been completely curled. The tendril or curly lock can be held in place with some spray while the edges of the gap are quickly trimmed to maximize the curliness.

  3. Step 3

Pin the hair over the gap using a hair pin. A hair pin can drape a larger amount of hair than a bobby pin. The hair pin should be used to create a slight curtain effect.

  4. Step 4

Increase the amount of curliness in the areas adjacent to the gap. A uniform look is critical with shorter hair styles. By increasing the overall curliness, any gaps that do form will be less noticeable.

  5. Step 5

Increase the amount of volume in shorter hair by lifting and pulling the hair up and using spray along with a gentle blow drying. Work with the amount of hair available until the gap fills in naturally as the hair grows out.
