Lip syncing in iStopMotion is the process of making it look like your characters are making the sounds ascribed to them in the soundtrack. IStopMotion allows you to move through your animation frame by frame, adjusting the mouth positions of your characters in real time as you go, to make your characters appear to be talking or singing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select the "View" tab at the bottom right of the iStopMotion animation screen.

  2. Step 2

Click on the "Rotoscope/Lip Sync" option.

  3. Step 3

Open up a movie. Click the button with the picture of a round gear on it. This opens your computer's browse function. Select "Load" and a movie file.

  4. Step 4

Click "Show in Main Window" located in the "Rotoscope/Lip-Sync" options menu and the movie you've just brought up appears in the iStopMotion animation working window in a split screen next to the real time camera view of the animation you're working on.

  5. Step 5

Press the red "Record" button directly beneath the iStopMotion animation working window and the next frame of the movie displays.

  6. Step 6

Move, or sync, the mouth or mouths of the characters that are displayed real time in the left half of the iStopMotion animation window so the mouth shapes match the sounds being created in the frozen frame of the movie displayed in the right half of the animation window.

  7. Step 7

Click the "Record" button again and the next frame of the animated movie is presented in the right half of the window.

  8. Step 8

Change the mouth shapes of your characters in the left half of the iStopMotion animation window to match the new movie frame displayed in the right half of the window.

  9. Step 9

Repeat the above steps until you've gone through the entire iStopMotion movie and the character's mouths are synced up with the sounds they are supposed to be making in each frame.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the system requirements before downloading the demo or purchasing the software license. IStopMotion only runs on Mac. To get the best results, Boinx suggests Mac OS X Tiger, QuickTime version 7.1 at least, a graphics card with OpenGL support and the still camera plugin Mac OS X v 10.3 or newer.
  • Boinx software recommends that users of Mac OS X v10.2.x run iStopMotion 1.5, and Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" users run iStopMotion version 1.8.1 or newer.
