How to Remove a Retaining Nut on Trucks

Removing the cotter pins and retaining nuts is an essential part of the process of replacing your truck's upper and lower ball joints. They will also be replaced, as new ones come with the ball joint replacement kits. Removing retaining nuts on trucks is a fairly easy task to do when working with your vehicle's tires.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Secure the truck on a set of jack stands. Give the truck a shake to make sure it is secure. Once the truck is secure, remove the wheel by removing the lug nuts, then lift the wheel off the hub studs. Set these items aside in a safe place for later re-installation.

  2. Step 2

Look at the new ball joint to notice how the retaining, or castle (named for the ramparts on it), nut and cotter pins are installed. This will help you know what to look for when you dive in to remove the old ones.

  3. Step 3

Use a pair of wire cutters (because of the level of grip) to pull the cotter pins out of the hole on the end of the upper ball joint. Once the pin is removed, dispose of it. (As mentioned, you get a new one in the replacement ball joint kit).

  4. Step 4

Break the retaining, or castle, nut loose using the appropriate socket as listed in your truck's repair manual. Continue ratcheting until the nut comes completely off, then dispose of it. If you have a difficult time breaking the nut loose, use some engine cleaner to help soften the corrosion and try again after a few minutes.
