Do-it-yourself car repair is a great way to save time and money. Replacing your truck's lower ball joints is one of the processes required in vehicle repair jobs involving calipers and brakes. One part of the process you will encounter is the need to remove the caliper bridge, which is part of your braking system.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Secure the truck properly on a set of jack stands and give it a little shove to make sure it is stable. Remove the wheel from the hub by removing the lug nuts and lifting off. Set these items aside.

  2. Step 2

Remove the brake caliper by using an Allen wrench to remove the upper and lower mounting bolts. Roll the caliper up and slide it backwards off the mounting stud. Use a metal coat hanger to make a two-sided hook. Hook one end to the caliper and the other to the air conditioning hose. Never let the caliper hang from its own hose, as this could damage it.

  3. Step 3

Use a half-inch ratchet with an 18mm socket (or the size specific to the make and model of your truck) to break loose the bolt on the caliper bridge. Keep ratcheting until you feel the bolt spin free, then remove with your fingers to avoid losing the bolt. Repeat the process for the bottom bolt.

  4. Step 4

Lift the caliper bridge off. Set it aside with the bolts for re-installation after completing the replacement of the upper and lower ball joints. Inspect the caliper bridge and bolts for excessive corrosion or damage. If either exist, replace the parts.
