The drum adjuster, sometimes called the star wheel, closes the distance between the brake shoe and the brake drum surface so you don't have to close that distance by stepping on the brake pedal harder. However, sometimes it can rust and needs to be changed to prevent a hazardous situation.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take the brake drum off your rear wheels and locate the drum adjuster toward the bottom of the brake spindle. This is a long rod that runs between your two brake shoes.

  2. Step 2

Use a pair of pliers or some side cuts to clamp on to one of the brake shoes.

  3. Step 3

Place your hand on the other brake shoe and push the two shoes apart to release the spring-loaded drum adjuster rod.

  4. Step 4

Slip the drum adjuster out of its seat and turn it counterclockwise to release it from the two shoes. The drum adjuster is threaded.

  5. Step 5

Wiggle the adjuster out of its position and press on one of the brake shoes to pop the adjuster out of place.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you remove the adjuster, check it for wear and be sure to clean the rust and brake dust off it. Also, apply lubrication to make sure your star wheel turns properly when you're adjusting your brake shoes.
  • When removing the adjuster, be sure not to yank it out of its position. It should come out with just a little wiggling and pressure to the brake shoe.
