Step 1
Adjust the drum brakes as you do the repair or replacement job. This should take care of a lot of the adjusting, only leaving some finally touches at the end. Re-install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts using the star method and torque them according to your vehicle's manual.
-
Step 2
Spin the wheel. If the drum brakes are adjusted correctly, the tire should only complete one revolution before stopping itself. If it goes around twice, you will need to adjust it.
-
Step 3
Climb under the vehicle to behind the wheel for the brake you are adjusting. Locate the plug in the braking system and pop it out with a flat-head screwdriver. This will give you access to the star wheel. Place the screwdriver in the hole the plug was in and carefully feel for the star wheel.
-
Step 4
Slowly push the star wheel up; you will be able to hear it moving. Do this until there is a good amount of drag on the tire. You can check this by trying to spin the tire while you are adjusting. When you have finished the adjustments, re-install the rubber plug by putting it back into the hole.
