Knowing how to adjust your drum brakes is a great skill to help maintain the drum braking system of your vehicle. Do-it-yourself maintenance can save you time and money. Learn how to clean your drum adjusters in just a few minutes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the various components of the drum adjuster. This will include the adjuster cup, thrust washer, star wheel, and receiver cup. Lay them all out on a magnetic tray. Find a good cleaning solvent that is safe to use on all parts and can be easily rinsed off.

  2. Step 2

Spray them with cleaning solvent, inside and out. Make sure they are completely drenched. Set them aside to sit for a few moments, allowing the solvent to work at cleaning them. You may see a slight foaming action, which should not alarm you as some solvents have agents in them that cause a reaction with the metal.

  3. Step 3

Rinse the solvent off with water and then dry them. Take a moment to inspect each part carefully for excessive corrosion or damage. If there is damage or corrosion, you will need to replace the part. These parts can all be found at your local auto parts store or vehicle manufacturer's local dealership.

  4. Step 4

Place the parts in a safe place while you complete the drum brake adjustments. This should be in a place where they will not be lost, damaged or collect grit or grime on a newly cleaned surface such as a covered workbench.
