If you're sculpting a model figurine and want to add character through fashion and style, any type of hat is a great addition to personalize your figurine. Most hats consist of a brim and cap as the two main components, but don't forget to add details and accessories to the hat, and to add hair beneath the hat.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Clay
  • Cutting wire and other clay tools

Step1
Prepare the figurine's head for a hat. Use your cutting wire or another cutting tool to remove the figurine's head above the line where the brim will sit.
Step2
Roll the clay out into an even slab for the brim of the hat. Cut out the shape of the brim, which will vary in shape and size depending on the type of hat. Some hats may have a brim only on one side of the head, but only worry about shaping the brim on the edge that will be showing, not the edge you'll affix to the head.
Step3
Score the top of the head and the bottom of the brim and affix with slip.
Step4
Roll a small piece of clay in your hands to create the cap of the hat. Again, this will vary in shape and size depending on the type of hat, but remember to make it large enough so that its proportions appear large enough to cover the head.
Step5
Score the top of the brim and bottom of the cap and affix with slip. Clean up the seams using slip and clay tools.
Step6
Add details like ribbon, feathers, fur texture or any other special features of your hat. Remember to score and slip when connecting pieces.
Step7
Add hair beneath the brim of the hat after you finish if desired.
