The switch ollie's a challenging variation of the classic ollie. Although it's great for improving your coordination and learning multi-directional tricks in the skate park, it's equally at home on the streets. One thing you can use the switch ollie for is to jump down a flight of stairs. This is, of course, inherently dangerous, but by following these steps you can make your jump as safe and stylish as possible.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ride toward the stairs at a moderate pace in the switch stance. You don't want too much speed heading into the jump, but you'll need enough to get you over the stairs.

  2. Step 2

Drop down into a deep crouch as you near the stairs. This preps your body for the ollie and helps you stay balanced into the trick.

  3. Step 3

Ollie shortly before your front truck's over the stairs. Remember to pound the rear kicktail into the ground as your body rises into the air.

  4. Step 4

Slide your front foot forward across the deck to level the board out as you coast over the stairs.

  5. Step 5

Land beyond the stairs so that both of your feet hit the ground at the same time. They should also be positioned over the bolts.

  6. Step 6

Bend your knees to absorb the impact of the jump right as you touch down. This is probably the most important element of doing the ollie down a set of stairs, because it prevents injury and gives your trick some style.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice the switch ollie off of curbs before trying it over stairs.
  • Remember to position your rear foot on the very back end of the rear kicktail before you throw the ollie.
