Bagpipes have four separate reeds. Each bagpipe reed has to be installed in the proper manner in order for the bagpipe to play correctly. Installing a reed in a bagpipe is not a difficult process but requires a few carefully executed steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get the proper reeds for the type of bagpipe which you are playing. There is a little variety also between companies, so try the reeds from a couple different companies at first.

  2. Step 2

Install the chanter reed into the top of the chanter. The chanter reed resembles an oboe reed in that it is a double cane reed. It is wrapped with waxed thread and forms a tight seal in the holder.

  3. Step 3

Fit the drone reeds. Most drone reeds are no longer made of cane, but are instead made of plastic or some composite materials. This allows for consistently matching drone reeds which offer optimal performance when playing the bagpipe.

  4. Step 4

Put the reeds into the drones carefully and make certain they are seated snuggly. Gently push and twist slightly to set the reed.

  5. Step 5

Practice playing a scale once the reeds are installed to guarantee they are placed correctly. If one of the reeds makes an unexpected squeak or does not play at all, check to make sure it is not cracked or improperly installed.
