Using a multi-rig synthesizer during a gig is a great way to complement the band's sound and express your style. Because there are more sounds to manage with a synthesizer than with an organ or a piano, you should take some extra time to prepare yourself mentally and physically for the performance. Although each keyboardist's warmup is unique, here are some general guidelines you can follow to make yours efficient and effective.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Organize your synthesizers so they're easy to reach during the performance. Unless you're working with a ring of 10 or more synths, keeping them within reach shouldn't be hard.

  2. Step 2

Plan which sounds or instruments you're going to use during each of your songs before you play. You'll want some degree of freedom during improvisation, but planning in advance is still a good idea.

  3. Step 3

Work out which hand you'll use to play individual harmonies and melodies during each song. In general, you'll have an easier time if you devote your good hand to melodies and your bad hand to harmonies.

  4. Step 4

Warm up your hands and arms before the performance. Basic stretching and fingering exercises go a long way toward preventing injury and will improve your control during the gig.

  5. Step 5

Make sure you've got access to water during the show. Even though you won't be singing, it's always a good idea to stay properly hydrated while you play.

  6. Step 6

Keep a towel or washcloth handy to wipe sweat off your brow, arms and the synthesizer.
