Circuit bending is a popular hobby that includes "bending," or short circuiting, an electronic toy or instrument. Once the toy is open, you can utilize the circuit board to create new sounds controlled by additional switches you can install. One of the steps of this process is to work with the screws holding the toy together and holding the circuit board together.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Electronic toy
  • Heat-resistant surface
  • Jewelers screwdrivers
  • Batteries
  • Magnetic tray
  • Pill container
  1. Step 1

Decide on the electronic toy you want to use for this process. This is based solely on personal opinion. Look for a toy that has sounds, colors, buttons and functions you enjoy. If you are interested in installing additional buttons or switches, look for a toy with empty spaces on the casing to install the additional buttons.

  2. Step 2

Gather the tools and items you need for your circuit bending project. Make sure to work on a heat-resistant work surface. Heat-resistant mats are available for purchase at most home improvement, hardware or craft stores.

  3. Step 3

Use the jewelers screwdrivers to unscrew all of the tiny screws on the back of the electronic toy. There will be many of them. They are often recessed into the casing and can be hard to retrieve. The solution for this is to unscrew all of them leaving them in the hole, then flip it over and spill them all out on the table.

  4. Step 4

Utilize a pill container, magnetic tray or other means of keeping the screws together where they will not get lost. You should use the original screws when reassembling, since they are often an usual size and exclusive to the toy.

  5. Step 5

Choose to leave them in the casing by loosening them to the point where the backing will come off, but they stay in the holes. Some toys are made to do this, as you will notice with the battery compartment. Others are not, so you can screw them back through the hole a little after the back is lifted off. This will prevent you from having to take them all the way out and risk losing them.
