If you suddenly notice that sparks are flying when you use your belt sander, you probably not only quit, but also unplug the machine if it isn't portable. Before you call out the army and the reserves, turn the belt sander over. Frequently the belt moves to the side and no longer covers the housing. You probably need to track the belt sander.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Put on all protective gear necessary. In this case, use safety glasses and, since the sander is loud, earplugs. Though the sound may not hurt your ears today, the effect of years of noise creates tone deafness.

  2. Step 2

Turn the sander over. There's a knob on the side of the sander that helps you to track the belt sander. This knob adjusts the tension on the front wheel. The additional tension moves the belt from side to side and allows you to track the belt sander.

  3. Step 3

Turn the sander on. Make sure the front of the sander rests on the table and nothing touches the sanding belt when you track the belt sander. As the belt moves, hold the sander in one hand and adjust the knob with the other.

  4. Step 4

Align the belt so it's centered. After you line up the belt, begin the task at hand.

  5. Step 5

Check the sander frequently after you track it. Make sure that the belt remains in place. New belts frequently have the habit of stretching and moving as they begin to wear. Take a few minutes during use and look at the alignment to make certain you don't need another adjustment.

Tips & Warnings
  • This tends to happen right after you first change the belt on the sander since not all belts are exactly the same tension. Watch for it and prevent it before it happens.
