A damaged screen is the most common problem with a sliding screen door. You can easily replace it using only a few tools. Take your door measurements to a local hardware or home improvement store to buy a replacement screen.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pick
  • Tape measure
  1. Step 1

Take the sliding screen door out of the frame by lifting it up and pulling the bottom towards you. Angle the top out of the frame. Once the door is out, lay it on the floor, ground or a flat surface.

  2. Step 2

Remove the spline carefully using a pick or other sharp object to get it out of the door frame. The spline is a rubber piece tucked into the door frame that holds the screen in place.

  3. Step 3

Tear the old screen out of the door while you have it lying flat.

  4. Step 4

Measure the outside of the door using a tape measure. Make sure to take the measurements from the outer edge of the door frame on all sides measuring the length and width of the frame. Double check by measuring twice.

  5. Step 5

Write down the measurements and take them with you to the store. Buy a section of screen that is a few inches wider than your measurements.

  6. Step 6

Lay the replacement screen on top the frame while it is lying flat. Make sure the screen covers the entire area with extra around all sides.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the spline that is used to hold the screen in place is in good shape. If it is cracked or brittle, purchase a new spline when you buy your replacement screen.
