Copper is not a one-size-fits-all material, and it actually comes in more than one grade. This article can help you better determine which copper pipe to use in your applications.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose the grade of copper pipe that you wish to use.

  2. Step 2

Use the L grade of copper pipe for plumbing applications, especially inside walls of your house. The L grade of pipe is a heavier grade of pipe. It is also more expensive.

  3. Step 3

Pick the M grade of pipe for exterior applications. Because the M grade of copper pipe is thinner than the L grade, it works well for exterior applications, where a leak can be more easily accessed and repaired. The M grade of copper pipe works well when you use it to plumb fountains or other exterior applications.

  4. Step 4

Employ the M grade of pipe for works of art. Because the M grade of pipe is lighter, it is also less expensive for than the L grade of copper pipe, making it a great choice for use in art projects.

  5. Step 5

Let the application of the copper pipe determine which grade you will use. Because the price of copper has increased, you can save yourself money by using a lighter grade of copper pipe if you are not planning on doing interior plumbing.
