Step 1
Check the valve of the MAPP torch before igniting it. The valve should be completely off so that you can control the flow of the gas from the torch when you ignite it. Being able to controlling the flow of the gas is an excellent way to avoid any potentially dangerous accidents.
-
Step 2
Look at the nozzle adjustment. The nozzle adjustment controls the flow of air into the torch which allows the flame's heat to be hotter or cooler. It is a good idea to make any adjustments now, before igniting the MAPP, rather than being surprised by an extremely hot flame when you ignite it. After igniting the torch, you can always adjust the heat of the flame as you wish.
-
Step 3
Begin the process of igniting the MAPP torch by releasing the valve just enough so that you hear a little bit of gas coming out of the torch. It should make an audible hissing sound.
-
Step 4
Choose a lighter or a flint to ignite the gas of your MAPP torch. A lighter can work well, however, you have to be careful to hold it well below the nozzle of the MAPP torch so you do not ignite your hand also. You may find that the rush of gas from the MAPP torch could extinguish the lighter's flame before igniting the MAPP torch. A flint designed for the purpose ignites the gas of the MAPP more consistently, and because of the long handles on the flint, presents less of a risk for igniting your hand.
