How to Fill Stockings

"The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in the hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there." And so go the famous words of the "Twas the Night Before Christmas" poem. However, if you've ever tried to actually fill those stockings, you know it can be a bit tricky. Here's how to fill stockings properly for your friends and family at Christmas.

1. Hang the stockings securely on your tree or by the chimney. Every family has a slightly different tradition when it comes to placing the stockings. The important thing is that whatever you hang the stockings on can support a lot of weight. Doorknobs are great places in lieu of hooks. Don't be afraid to add a couple of nails into the wall to hang the stockings. Just place them in inconspicuous places so they are hidden throughout the rest of the year.
2. Put heavy items into the bottom of the stockings first. Think of filling your stockings the same way a bagger fills your bags at the grocery store. The heaviest things are always reserved for the bottom.
3. Add lighter items and Christmas presents on top of the heavier ones.
4. Leave a few presents sticking out of the stockings so that your friends and family recognize it's filled when they see it. After all you don't want them to miss their Christmas presents.

Tips & Warnings

• Don't fret if something doesn't seem to fit when you fill the stocking. Just wrap it and put it under the Christmas tree.
• Oversized fruit and seasonal candies are great things to fill a Christmas stocking.
• Wrapping the gifts that you fill the Christmas stocking with will prolong the morning. Many kids have a propensity to tear through things. Let them open the smaller items in the stocking first and then move onto the big presents under the tree.
