How to Make a Great First Impression

While there are different opinions on how long you have to make a great first impression, it is generally agreed upon that within 30 seconds of meeting someone, a first impression has been formed. First impressions are typically based on appearance, dress, body language and mannerism.

Instructions

    • 1

Present yourself appropriately. Choose a style of dress that is appropriate for the situation in which you are meeting someone. Think about how that person most likely dresses, and dress accordingly. Be clean and well groomed when meeting someone for the first time.

    • 2

Arrive on time. There is no excuse for being late for a first meeting. Plan to arrive early and allow yourself extra time for unexpected delays. Punctuality is important for creating a good impression.

    • 3

Make eye contact. When introducing yourself to someone, look directly into his eyes. Continue to make eye contact during your conversation with him, but do not continually stare. Break eye contact periodically and then resume it again.

    • 4

Offer your hand to the other person first if she does not extend hers immediately. Have a firm and confident hand shake.

    • 5

Smile when you say hello. A smile tells the other person that you are happy to meet him. A warm and confident smile also helps to put both you and the other person at ease.

    • 6

Maintain good posture. Stand up tall, hold your head high and keep your shoulders slightly back to project confidence and create a good first impression. Do not slouch in your chair when you sit down.

    • 7

Keep your body language open. Do not cross your arms or legs, which gives the message that you are hiding something. Turn your body towards the person you are talking to so you appear open and friendly.
