Orchids can be a beautiful addition to your home or flower garden. There are many different kinds of orchids available and even more people who sell them. Whether you are a new or experienced orchid grower, follow these steps to buy good orchid plants.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for mature orchid plants. These are more hardy and easier to take care of than small, baby plants. They will cost more than seedlings, but it's worth the extra cost for most people.

  2. Step 2

Choose plants that have proven to grow successfully in your area. Climates vary drastically from one area of a country to another. One of the benefits of buying from a grower near you is you already know these orchids can grow in your area. Once you are aware of them, you can purchase them online.

  3. Step 3

Research the plant and its needs and only purchase it if you are sure you can care for it properly. Each type of orchid may need different things, such as different amounts of light. Some only do well in a greenhouse.

  4. Step 4

Try to buy your orchids from reputable growers. However, if you only have access to a grocery store or generic garden store, make sure you buy a healthy plant.

  5. Step 5

Inspect your orchid plant carefully. The leaves shouldn't appear wrinkled, and the potting mix should be moist. Leaves can be almost any shade of green, but the color should be uniform over the leaves. Grasp the plant gently and make sure it is rooted firmly in the dirt. Avoid plants that appear to have any sort of problem. There's a good chance it will die shortly after bringing it home.
