Grant-writing skills are important in business. If you work for any form of non-profit, you will call upon these skills repeatedly as a consultant. You might decide to consult for other companies as well. If so, you must understand what is involved in writing grants.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Work on your grant-writing skills. Write a few "fake" grants to practice and see how they measure up to examples you run across of "real" grants.
Step2
Maintain a good understanding of the needs of a non-profit. Decision-making is a big part in granting money, as well as asking for a grant. There must be a true need involved and you, as the grant-writing consultant, must convey the need to possible donors. Almost everything they do depends on grant money or other donations.
Step3
Display your talents in writing, editing and getting the major point across in a grant document. Learn how to pull out and highlight specific needs. This is the job of a grant-writing consultant.
Step4
Obtain basic grant and proposal writing skills. There are many educational courses and publications you can check into for this. Check with your local college, in bookstores and on the Internet. You must learn the specific language to use in your requests.
Step5
Take advantage of the resources that abound for non-profit entities. One of these is the Foundation Center. They list grants available and have information you can use to complete your grant proposal.

Tips & Warnings
