How to Wear Pop Art Makeup

Perhaps you were taught that the trick to proper makeup application is to make it look like you're not wearing any. When it comes to the latest trend on the runways, however, the key is to not only look like you're wearing makeup, but to make your makeup impossible to ignore. For a bold, fun look, why not cop the latest Pop art trend in makeup.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sweep a bold shade of turquoise, periwinkle or electric blue over your eyelid. Use a cream shadow for added intensity and apply it all the way up to your brow bone, stopping just short of the eyebrow arch.

  2. Step 2

Line the upper lid with a liquid black liner, such as Urban Decay 24/7 in Zero. Apply a generous coat of black mascara to the upper lashes and a thin coat to the bottom lashes.

  3. Step 3

Apply a cool shade of red lipstick, such as Nars' Bloodwork lip gloss, generously to the lips. This will give your pout a shiny finish to make it "pop".

  4. Step 4

Paint nails with a bold blue shade, such as Sephora nail polish in 55. Nails should be short and squarish, rather than long and pointy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check "neutral" colors at the door. Browns, taupes and any other earth tones won't work for pop art makeup. The goal is to look dramatic and fun, not earthy or natural.
  • Use bright, rich colors. Primary colors such as red, green and blue, as well as secondary and tertiary colors such as orange, turquoise and pink, are the hallmark of the Pop art movement.
  • Keep makeup lines angular. Forget about the traditional makeup application rule of "blending". Pop art makeup is defined and quite literally edgy.
  • For inspiration, think of Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe paintings and Boy George in his 80s hey-days.
