Maintenance on computer hardware like a laptop's motherboard should almost never be attempted by anyone other than a professional technician. Nonetheless, if you absolutely need to remove a laptop's motherboard by yourself, you must do so with extreme caution.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Unplug the laptop and remove the battery so there will be no power running to the motherboard. The battery should be in the computer's back, locked in place by a built in screw that can be turned to unlock it.
Step2
Remove the laptop's keyboard. It should be held in place either by screws or latches at the top of the keyboard. You should now see the motherboard underneath the keyboard.
Step3
Detach and remove the top casing from the laptop so you will have complete, unblocked access to the motherboard.
Step4
Disconnect all the cables and other modules that connect the motherboard to the rest of the hardware. This should include the processor and its fan, the USB board cable, the DC jack, the wireless card, the hard disk and the CD drive.
Step5
Unscrew the motherboard from the laptop and carefully remove it. Keep in mind that the processor and graphics card may be incorporated within the motherboard.

Tips & Warnings

  • The method of unscrewing and removing parts like the keyboard and motherboard may vary depending on the model. You may also need to remove hardware like the hard disk, wireless card and CD drive first.
  • Removing a motherboard yourself is not recommended. Not only do you risk losing parts and being unable to put the computer back together, but most manufacturers will void the warranty if you try to service the computer yourself.
