Whether you have curly hair and you want to go straight or you have straight hair and want to add body and shine, you can use a ceramic hair straightener, also known as a flat iron, to achieve that look. But make sure you prepare your hair properly to prevent damage when straightening your hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Smoothing shampoo and conditioner
  • Styling cream or gel
  • Hair dryer (optional)
  • Wire-rimmed hairbrush
  • Ceramic straightener
  • Iron-smoothing hair product
  1. Step 1

Shampoo and condition your hair. Use a product that smooths and moisturizes your hair. One such product line is "Sleek Look" by Matrix. Because straightening can cause damage to the hair, consider using a "Recovery Treatment" system, which you can apply after shampooing your hair and leave in for two to three minutes before rinsing out.

  2. Step 2

Apply a styling cream or gel to your hair. To protect your hair from the heat used in the straightening process, use a product that protects your hair. This product may also control frizz but doesn't make your hair stiff.

  3. Step 3

Blow-dry your hair. Use a wire-rimmed hairbrush because its metal brushes become hot with the heat from the hair dryer, which allows you to begin straightening your hair while drying it.

  4. Step 4

Separate your hair into sections. Begin by straightening the bottom of your hair, better known as "underneath." Place the remainder of your hair on top of your head with a clip and pull down sections of your hair from the clip as you work your way around your head, straightening the sections as you go.

  5. Step 5

Use a smoothing iron spray. When you pull a section of your hair down, spray it with a protection and smoothing spray, such as "Iron Smoother" by Matrix. This spray will also leave your hair with a shine.

  6. Step 6

Complete your straightened hair. Because water can cause even the straightest hair to curl or become frizzy, it's important to use a water-free hairspray.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using too high of a heat setting on a straightener can cause permanent damage to your hair, which is only fixable by cutting the damaged hair and allowing new growth to take its place.
