For weddings and proms, you can expect that sophisticated, curly updos will be the popular hairstyle. But if you're going for that same curly updo year-round, you can get the look you want by using the right products, and with some trial and error on your part in working with your hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Defining shampoo and conditioner (optional)
  • Styling gel or mousse (optional)
  • Curling iron
  • Hair tie or clip
  • Bobby pins (optional)
  • Hairspray
  1. Step 1

Wash your hair with a defining shampoo and conditioner. If you have naturally curly hair, you can use your regular shampoo, but if your hair is normally limp and unable to hold a curl, Matrix has a "Curl Life" product line that creates frizz-free curls.

  2. Step 2

Blow-dry your hair. Apply a styling gel or mousse, such as the Body Shaping Foam by Matrix, to your hair before drying it to add body and lasting definition. As you're blow-drying, run your fingers through your hair and scrunch it at the ends with the palm of your hand.

  3. Step 3

Separate your curls. With your hair dry, you can begin to separate out portions of your hair to determine that the curls will hold in an updo. If your curls are loose and weak, use a curling iron with spray gel or spritz to make them bolder.

  4. Step 4

Pull your hair back into a ponytail. This may be the updo you're looking for. If not, you can use a clip to do a half flip, then clip under the flip to make a full, curly look. You can pull pieces of your hair out on the sides and underneath from your updo and curl them with the curling iron.

  5. Step 5

Finish your curly updo. Use a humidity resistant hairspray, but one that doesn't make your hair stiff. You want your curly updo to be springy and full of life.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use bobby pins to secure any stray hairs that will not stay in your updo and that you don't want to leave out and curl as separate pieces.
