How to Deep Clean Hardwood Floors

Although you probably regularly surface clean your hardwood floors, you should plan to deep clean the flooring every couple months or so. After you've taken the time to deep clean your hardwood floors, you'll notice how beautiful and shiny they look.

Step1

Sweep any dirt and debris off the floor. Use a broom with soft bristles and try to get all reachable spots in the room.

Step2

Use a vacuum cleaner attachment to lift up any leftover dirt. If you're unable to get to the dirt in corners and crevices, use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner in these areas.

Step3

Clean the floor with a dry mop. You can use the Swifter mop to remove stains and dirt from the hardwood floors. You shouldn't use a mop with water since this will damage the wood.

Step4

Go over the floor with a wood floor stain lifter. Spray the cleaner on a clean cloth and rub at the stain. You can also use the stain lifter to get rid of any scuff marks on the hardwood flooring.

Step5

Wax and buff your hardwood floors. If you don't have a delicate finish, you can deep clean the flooring by buffing and waxing the area.

Tips & Warnings

Remember to always check with your hardwood flooring's manufacturer prior to deep cleaning. If you don't follow their recommendations, you may inadvertently void the warranty.
You can choose to refinish the floor if necessary. When the floor has suffered major damage, you can choose to sand it down and apply a new finish.
