How to Remove a Tampon

If you choose to use tampons for menstrual protection, knowing how to remove a tampon is crucial. While the process can be awkward at first, you will find that it becomes easier with practice. Follow these steps to learn how to successfully remove a tampon.

Instructions

1. Wash your hands with soap and water.

2. Sit on the toilet with your legs and knees spread apart.

3. Locate the tampon string with your fingers and gently pull on the string. Pull at the same angle at which your inserted the tampon.

4. Discard the used tampon in the toilet or in the trash can. If discarding the tampon in the trash can, be sure to wrap it up using toilet paper or facial tissue.

5. Insert a new tampon if necessary.

• If it hurts when you remove your tampon or if the tampon seems dry and is still the white color of a fresh tampon, consider using a tampon with a lower absorbency or changing your tampon less frequently (but no more than every 8 hours).
• If you can't find the tampon string or if your tampon doesn't have a string, you can still try to remove the tampon yourself. Simply insert a cleaned finger or two into your vagina and attempt to pull the tampon out.
• Always remember to remove your tampon at the end of your menstrual period.
• If you can't find the tampon for removal, or if you have difficulty removing the tampon, contact your doctor for assistance.
• Remove and change your tampon at least every 4 to 8 hours. Doing so can help prevent the risk of infection, such as Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).
