If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, you probably wonder what caused this. Many people believe it to be the way parents raise their children, but research shows that ADHD has more to do with environmental factors, brain damage or genetics.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit your doctor to discuss the possibility of your child having ADHD. If your child is found to have ADHD, you can then look into the cause of ADHD and whether there's a genetic cause or not. Ask your doctor to make a list of any factors that can cause ADHD and go over the results with him.

  2. Step 2

Have your child tested to see the amount of dopamine is in her system. Researchers believe that children with ADHD have lower levels of dopamine in their brain. If your child has a lower level of dopamine, this could be a genetic cause of ADHD.

  3. Step 3

Look back at your family history and see if any family members have ADHD. With identical twins, with the same genetic make, if one has it, the other probably exhibits the same symptoms if ADHD is a genetic cause. A child of an adult with ADHD is 25 percent more likely to have ADHD. ADHD that continues into adulthood rather than disappearing is hereditary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Not all cases of ADHD are a caused by genetics. Environmental factors can cause ADHD as well. The treatment for ADHD is typically the same no matter what the cause of ADHD.
