A Yukata is traditional summer wear in the Japanese culture. Combine the Japanese paper craft of Origami with the Yukata to get a miniature version of the garment. Making a Yukata from Origami is somewhat difficult, making this project best suited for experienced paper crafters.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Origami paper
  1. Step 1

Fold the paper in half lengthwise and then unfold it. Fold the paper in half width wise, and unfold it.

  2. Step 2

Bring the two sides of the paper in to the center fold line, and crease them. Keep the sides folded. Fold the edges of each side in 1/4 of an inch. Make a hard crease on the fold. Unfold the right side.

  3. Step 3

Start at the horizontal fold on the left side, and fold the corner back 45 degrees to expose the white part of the paper. Fold the corner back on itself 1/8 of an inch. Crease the folds.

  4. Step 4

Pull the right side of the paper over so that it overlaps half of the left side, make a crease. Fold the right corner to a 45 degree angle, starting 1/4 inch below the center crease line. Fold the edge of the corner back on itself 1/8 of an inch, to expose the colored paper.

  5. Step 5

Locate the vertical crease lines on each side of the Yukata. Fold the paper backwards at these lines, and crease them.

  6. Step 6

Mark the top half of the Yukata into thirds. Fold the upper two thirds of the paper garment backwards to form the sleeves of the Yukata. Add a small strip of contrasting paper at the waist of the Yukata for the belt.
