Temporary dreads allow you to see if the look is right for you before you commit to having your hair permanently dreadlocked. With the right product and hair that's at least an inch long, you can take dreads for a "test drive" to see how you like them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Rat-tail comb
  • Hair clips
  • Hair gel
  • Hair iron
  1. Step 1

Wash your hair and condition it. Let it dry naturally.

  2. Step 2

Divide your hair into sections using the rat-tail comb. Depending on the thickness of your hair and its length, clip each section of hair into even portions no larger than 1-inch square. You may want to have a friend help you with this task.

  3. Step 3

Take a section of hair close to your neck. Lightly coat the section with hair gel. Try to leave about 2 or 3 inches untwisted next to your head. Twist the rest until it's as tight as you want it. The hair gel should hold it in place.

  4. Step 4

Continue to twist each section of hair as you did in Step 3. Finish with the crown of your head. Place each of the temporary dreads in the position where you wish it to remain as you finish it.

  5. Step 5

Place each dread lock in a heated straightening iron for a few seconds. You may need to do this step if you have fine, wispy hair. If the dread locks seem to be staying in place without the heat, you can skip this step.

  6. Step 6

Rub conditioner into your hair and scalp within 48 hours of creating the temporary dread locks. Follow the conditioner with shampoo to remove the twists and the hair gel.
