Spot Violence in the Workplace

Many people feel safe at their jobs and don't realize the high incidence of workplace violence in the United States. Workplace violence involves an actual violent act or threat of violence to a worker. To keep all employees safe, each person should know how to spot workplace violence.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out the workers who are most vulnerable to workplace violence. Anyone can experience workplace violence, but people who handle money, perform public services and work alone in high crime areas have a higher chance of being a victim of some form of violence.

    • 2

Attend personal safety seminars. Both employees and employers can benefit from these OSHA regulated programs. During the program, signs, statistics and precautions against workplace violence will be covered (see Resources below).

    • 3

Notice any changes in behavior. In some cases, employees choose not to report violent acts committed against them. If you notice behavioral changes, like a withdrawn or fearful attitude, you should attempt to broach the subject.

    • 4

Consider candidates who may commit acts of violence in the workplace. Certain work situations, such as getting fired or laid off and disciplinary actions, can lead an unstable person to commit violent acts.

    • 5

Watch for potential warning signs. People who get violent at work may display warning signs prior to the incident. Take the necessary precautions against workers who make violent threats, bring weapons to work, use abusive language or intimidate fellow employees.

Tips & Warnings

  • You must call authorities immediately if you witness violence in the workplace. You need to let employees or management know of a possible problem as well.
