It is a common myth that you can change the size of your pores. It is also a common myth that pores open and close. The size of your pores is genetically determined. If your parents have large pores, chances are good that you do as well. Pores appear larger when they are full of dirt or oil. Keeping your pores clean makes them appear smaller.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use makeup carefully. Only use the amount that you really need to. Heavy use of foundation makeup causes the makeup to settle into your pores, clogging them and making them appear larger. When using a powder foundation, brush any excess or loose powder off of your face. When using a cream or liquid foundation, apply sparingly and blend carefully.

  2. Step 2

Wash your face twice a day using warm water and a mild soap. Avoid scrubbing your skin hard when washing, but be sure to remove all dirt and makeup at bedtime.

  3. Step 3

Use an oil-free acne cleanser that contains salicylic acid after washing your face at night. These are marketed under several different brand names.

  4. Step 4

Saturate a cotton ball with witch hazel and dab it on your face, concentrating on areas where your pores appear large or dirty. It is a good idea to do this twice a day after washing your face.

  5. Step 5

Exfoliate the skin on your face once a week. Avoid harsh exfoliators that contain found nuts or shells. Instead, choose a fruit based exfoliator which is less drying and gentler on your skin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pore cleaning strips, such as the ones put out by Biore, also can be used to help keep pores clean. Use them once every couple of weeks to prevent white or black heads developing from clogged or dirty pores.
