Bias cut garments drape differently than garments cut on the grain. Put a simple shell blouse cut on the grain beside the same pattern cut on the bias and you can immediately see the difference. Bias cut garments do take more effort to create the bias effect, but with mid-level sewing skills you can sew a simple bias cut garment.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose your fabric. Look for fabric that has a pattern that can make a unique bias cut garment. Smaller stripes and patterns are a bit more forgiving if they aren't put together just right. Also look for fabric that has the pattern woven in to it rather than stamped on the surface.

  2. Step 2

Pick a simple pattern. A sleeveless pullover blouse or an A-line skirt is a good way to experiment with bias cut. Check the pattern envelope to see if the pattern is suitable for a bias cut garment.

  3. Step 3

Purchase the amount of fabric listed on the pattern for the bias cut version. If that's not available, use the yardage for napped fabric. Allow extra fabric to cut the garment on the bias.

  4. Step 4

Lay the fabric on the table in a single layer. Cut out one side of the piece, and then flip the pattern over to cut out the other side. Pay special attention to matching the notches and dots.

  5. Step 5

Pin the front pieces together with the right sides together. Make sure the bias lines are doing what you want them to do. Sew the pieces together. Since bias cut fabric is stretchy allow for some extra give.

  6. Step 6

Continue sewing the bias pieces together according to the pattern directions. Let the garment hang at least 24 hours before you sew any of the hems in place.
