Placing a single, beautiful bloom into a tall, narrow vase is a piece of cake. Arranging an assortment of flowers into a wide-mouthed vase or bowl, however, is more of a challenge. Use these tips to assemble and position flowers in a wide container as a centerpiece or pretty décor for your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Design an arrangement by securing short-stemmed flowers in floral foam. Place a block of foam inside a tall bowl or wide vase. If it's clear glass, camouflage the foam by surrounding it with glass marbles, river rocks or green leaves. Start with your widest flowers first, then trim and insert enough smaller blooms and greenery to completely cover the foam. (See Resources)

  2. Step 2

Use a wide bowl to create a beautiful centerpiece in minutes. Fill it halfway with water, cut several open flowers like gardenias, daffodils or Gerbera daisies and simply float them on the water.

  3. Step 3

Create a framework with floral tape to secure flowers in a large bowl. Create a grid that resembles a tic-tac-toe board with the tape, sticking the ends to the bowl itself. Fill the bowl with water, then trim and insert an assortment of flowers, which will remain upright because of the tape and cover it at the same time. (See Resources)

  4. Step 4

Secure smaller flowers by gathering them into a tight bouquet. Taper the arrangement so it forms a circular or pyramid shape, then trim the stems so they're the same length across the bottom. Tie a wide ribbon around the stems to keep them in position and then place the bunch into the wide vase.

Tips & Warnings
  • Prepare floral foam by cutting it to size, then placing it on the surface of a bowl of water. Remove it as soon as it sinks to the level of the water and then allow it to drain. Running it under the faucet or pushing it into the water may leave dry spots, while allowing it to soak too long will cause it to crumble.
  • Keep flowers fresh longer by adding flower "food" to water, removing any leaves that are soaking (and rotting) below the surface of the water and displaying the arrangement in a cool spot out of direct sunlight.
