How to Ace Calculus

Calculus can be a difficult course for high school and college students. In many cases, it is a required course which students must pass in order to receive a degree in their specified field of study. The good news is that it is possible to ace calculus by following these basic study strategies.

1. Attend class regularly and pay attention to the instructor. Take notes and ask questions if a topic is unclear to you.
2. Do all the homework assignments. Spend at least two hours on homework assignments and be sure you know how to solve each problem. Practice doing the types of problem with which you have difficulties.
3. Memorize definitions, formulas and theorems that you learn in class. These are necessary for homework, exams and quizzes. Avoid waiting until before the exam to memorize them.
4. Form a study group with other classmates and spend time doing homework and studying for exams. Try doing calculus problems every day as this is the best way to ace calculus.
5. Get immediate tutoring help if you have any difficulty with a topic in calculus. Go see the instructor, teaching assistant or a tutor and resolve this issue. Use study guides, online tutorials and solution manuals if these are helpful.
6. Prepare for exams by outlining the material you need to know for the exam. Start preparing at least five days before the exam to ensure you have adequate time to study. Make sure you know the definitions, equations and topics very well. Review the assigned homework and textbook exercises and go over any topic with which you have trouble.
7. Manage your time effectively on the day of the test. Read all the problems carefully and do the easy ones first. Avoid wasting too much time on difficult problems. Come back to these and try to do them; avoid leaving them blank as you may get partial credit for doing part of the problem right. Remember to check your answers if you have time.
