Step 1
Choose a brand and permanence of black hair dye. Generally, it's safer to choose a well-known brand or one a friend has recommended. Use semi- or demi-permanent hair dye if you're not sure how you'll look with black hair.
-
Step 2
Perform an allergy test on yourself at least two days before you dye. Smear a small daub of the dying mixture and apply it to the inside of your elbow. Leave this on for two days to make sure you don't develop an allergic reaction to the hair dye.
-
Step 3
Apply the black hair dye to a strand of your hair. Leave it on for the amount of time suggested for the actual dying process and then wash your hair. This will show you the actual color your hair will be.
-
Step 4
Work the black hair dye into your hair from roots to tips, making sure that the dye is evenly distributed.
-
Step 5
Cover your hair with a plastic bag and secure it with a hair clip. The heat will help the dye's chemicals work better.
-
Step 6
Wait the amount of time specified by the directions, then wash your hair until it the water runs clear and condition it.
