Problems with obesity and poor nutrition are common in America today, and are not limited to adults; they also affects a growing number of children. Planning a healthy diet for your children is a great way to build a strong foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating and physical health. A few tips can help.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin a healthy eating plan for your children as early as possible. Introducing as many fresh fruits and vegetables as possible at a young age will allow children to grow up with a taste for health. Additionally, be aware that what you eat will affect the way your children eat, so choosing a healthy diet for yourself is a great way to have a positive influence on children.

  2. Step 2

Offer your children fresh fruit juices instead of soda. Soda is addictive, full of sugar and contains absolutely nothing good for the body, so keeping it out of the house will help to keep your kids healthy while promoting positive drinks to curb a sweet tooth.

  3. Step 3

Get creative with your cooking, camouflaging vegetables creatively in tasty chili, soup, burritos, tacos or even veggie pizza. Some of your kids favorite foods don't have to be detrimental to their health. You can steam potatoes instead of frying them if they beg for French fries, cut chicken breasts into bite sized pieces and serve like chicken nuggets or add yogurt to fruit salad and freeze it for a cold treat that is far healthier than ice cream.

  4. Step 4

Keep your cupboards stocked with healthy snack foods, avoiding potato chips, sugary packaged foods and cookies. Keeping junk food out of the house will force your kids to reach for a healthy treat option. Instead, allow your children to snack on fresh fruit, trail mixes or peanut butter with celery and raisins.

  5. Step 5

Send your children off to school with a healthy packed lunch, avoiding prepackaged lunch boxes and sugary treats. Lunch might include a sandwich on whole wheat bread, an apple or other piece of fruit, raisins, nuts, trail mix, granola, a yogurt cup or other healthy, wholesome options.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get your children excited about eating a healthy diet by growing a family garden, letting them select fruits and vegetables in the supermarket and having them help to make meals.
