Beans are literally the "magical fruit," not because they make you toot, but because they offer a multitude of macronutrients that support a healthy body and even help you to lose weight. Available in a wide variety of colors, sizes, tastes and textures, beans are easy to add to salads, casseroles, soups and more to help keep you lean.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose beans over meats as a healthy source of protein with far few calories which will help you to lose weight without sacrificing nutrition. Beans are also free from cholesterol, unlike meat. An important part of weight loss and cardiovascular health is keeping cholesterol to a minimum, another reason why beans are better.

  2. Step 2

Feel full with a heaping helping of fiber-filled beans. Beans are a complex carbohydrate and excellent source of dietary fiber, helping to control blood sugar, reduce food cravings, help you feel full and satisfied faster and even help to eliminate constipation, adding to the list of ways beans can help you to lose weight.

  3. Step 3

Cut the fat and cook with beans. Beans are extremely low in fat, a super fact for anyone looking to lower the amount of fat in their diet. Beans are a delicious addition to just about any meal and need little more than a pinch of salt and pepper for a fabulous flavor, helping you to limit calories and fat content in salad dressings, burritos, tacos and more.

  4. Step 4

Get some negative calories for once. While beans do indeed contain their fair share of calories, they take more energy to digest than many foods, meaning that your body uses up the majority of calories found in beans just by digesting them.

  5. Step 5

Eat beans and lose weight, as studies have shown that legumes contain an enzyme which can block the break down and absorption of carbohydrates such as sugar, starch and milk. The bean highest in your new favorite enzyme is the delicious and nutritious kidney bean.

Tips & Warnings
  • Beans contain a substance called phytic acid which can block the absorption of vitamins and minerals in the body. Soaking beans overnight before cooking not only removes phytic acid, it also reduces the flatulent effect.
  • Canned beans are convenient and by all means can be included in your diet; however, they are also loaded with sodium and not guaranteed to be free of phytic acid. Whenever possible, cook fresh or dried beans. When using canned beans, rinse them as much as possible to remove excess sodium.
