Bodybuilders seem to speak a wholly different language than the rest of the world. Even frequent gym buffs can sometimes get lost listening to body builders discuss their current regimes or workout plans. However, learning the insider terms in bodybuilding language is far easier than it seems. Follow some easy steps to learn and use bodybuilding language like the pros and impress the professionals at your next gym outing.

From Quick Guide: Bodybuilding for Beginners
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by locating the biggest and most muscular men or women at your local gym and spend some time working out around them to get a feel for how they speak.

  2. Step 2

Become familiar with the physiological vocabulary that bodybuilders use such as; "quad" for quadricep, "cutting" to represent the muscle definition in a persons body, "guns" a slang term for biceps, "LBM" or lean body mass, and "pump," the phenomena of seeming larger after an intense heavy weight workout.

  3. Step 3

Now learn jargon that will be used in the gym by hardcore bodybuilders. Know easy words like "reps" to refer to repetitions, or the number of times an exercise is repeated and "burn" to denote the burning sensation that occurs in the muscle do to lactic muscle being stirred. However, also acquaint yourself with terms like "dialing it in" which refers to getting "shredded" or "cut" before a competition, and "full" to denote looking inflated and full of mass.

Tips & Warnings
  • Body builders like to use acronyms and abbreviations for many things so try shortening things; for example, instead of circuit training simply say CT.
  • Consider working out with one of the bodybuilders at the gym, or asking if you can observe them. They usually don't mind as long as you aren't interrupting or disrupting their workout schedule.
  • Enter an amateur bodybuilding contest so you can become intimately acquainted with the terminology and jargon used in the industry.
