Tourette's syndrome can be a strain on an individual's life. The tics associated with the syndrome can be extremely socially limiting, embarrassing, and all consuming. Finding effective treatments for tics can be exhaustive and takes some searching to locate one that works. Learn how to help control tics from Tourette's syndrome and find a viable treatment method that will help the patient regain control over uncontrollable behaviors.

From Quick Guide: Tourette's Syndrome Overview
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First learn about the various kinds of tics that can affect an individual. Know the four basic tic categories: simple motor tics, complex motor tics, simple phonic tics and complex vocal tics.

  2. Step 2

Assess the severity of the tics in the individual and determine how adversely the tics are affecting the emotional and social well being of the person. Realize that pharmacological, behavioral and psychological intervention strategies are available for treating tic symptoms.

  3. Step 3

Note that no medications are designed specifically to treat tic disorders. However, some antipsychotics, neuroleptic medications and antidepressants are successful in treating some severe cases of tics. You should discuss the negative and positive aspects to medical intervention with a doctor. Make sure the severity of the tics can only be dealt with medical intervention before choosing this option because of the adverse side effects.

  4. Step 4

Meet with a cognitive behavioral therapist who is well versed in dealing with Tourette's syndrome and tic disorder. Discuss the possible option of cognitive intervention, since it is usually quite effective in curbing many tic disturbances. Give cognitive therapy at least 6 months to see significant positive effects. Take frequent inventory of the psychological and social functioning of the person suffering from the tics.

  5. Step 5

Try various alternative remedies, such as biofeedback and neurofeedback therapy. Many medical researchers are studying alternative remedies for possible cures. Dietary and herbal supplements, and even low dosages of marijuana, seem to be effective in mellowing tic symptoms. In some Tourette's cases, patients find various ADD and ADHD treatment methods, like Ritalin, to be beneficial.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read psychology and medical news online for the latest treatments in controlling tic disorder; researchers often discover new and promising methods of intervention.
  • In children, Clondine is somewhat effective in controlling moderate tics, but has various side effects that should be discussed with a pediatrician.
  • Do not begin a medical treatment of tic syndrome before discussing possible options with a physician. The side effects can sometimes be more severe than the tics themselves.
