A workbench is an essential part to any garage. Build a simple workbench for your garage that provides plenty of work surface while taking up minimal room. Spend an afternoon assembling the work bench, assuming that you have all of the needed equipment and have some knowledge of wood working.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drill
  • Drill bits
  • Hammer
  • Saw
  • Chalk line
  • Level
  • Four heavy duty metal brackets
  • Measuring tape
  • 4 by 10 foot, 1/2 inch particle board
  • Five, 10-foot 2x4s
  • 5/16 by 3-inch lag bolts
  1. Step 1

Determine the height of the work bench. Mark the height on the wall with a snap line. Check the line with a level and make any adjustments needed.

  2. Step 2

Install the metal brackets onto wall studs. Place the top of the bracket just below the snap line on the wall. Pre-drill holes for the bolts. Use heavy duty bolts and an electric drill to install the brackets.

  3. Step 3

Cut six, 22-inch lengths of wood from a 2x4. Place one piece of cut wood on top of each bracket. Butt the end of the wood up against the wall stud. Secure the wood to the bracket with wood screws.

  4. Step 4

Measure and cut three pieces of wood from a 2x4 that are approximately 109 inches. Lay these lengths of wood on the support brackets. Place one piece against the wall, one in the center and one on the outer edge. Secure these with nails.

  5. Step 5

Place the remaining smaller lengths of wood at the end of the cross supports. Secure them in place with nails.

  6. Step 6

Make the last 2x4 to measure 110 inches. Attach this piece to the front of the work bench by nailing it to the front of the support pieces.

  7. Step 7

Use a saw to cut the particle board so that it is 110 inches long. Cut the board in half so that you have two 24x110 inch pieces. Stack the particle board on top of each other, and place them on the two by four supports. Nail the particle board to the supports.
