Babies tend to lose body heat through their heads, leading most caregivers to have newborns wear beanies or stocking caps for the first weeks of life. Crochet a baby beanie for the newest addition to the family by following the pattern below.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 oz. of baby yarn in desired color
  • Coordinating color pompom
  • No. 2 plastic crochet hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Glue
  1. Step 1

Start the beanie design by chaining two. Place six single crochets in second stitch from hook. Do not join any rounds in this pattern, unless specified. Put a stitch marker in to mark start of each round.

  2. Step 2

Stitch round two by putting two single crochets in each stitch. Move stitch marker to end of round.

  3. Step 3

Complete round three by stitching one single crochet in the first stitch, followed by two single crochets in the next stitch. Continue alternating one single crochet with two single crochets around to stitch marker. Place the stitch marker at the end of the round.

  4. Step 4

Start round four by placing one single crochet in the first two stitches, then two single crochets in the next stitch. Continue in this pattern until the diameter measures 4 1/2 inches. This may take more that one round. When the diameter measures desired length, place stitch marker to signify end of round. Work two more rounds from the stitch marker by placing one single crochet in each stitch.

  5. Step 5

Continue with the next round by chaining one. Working only in the back loop of the stitch, put one single crochet in each stitch, join to the first single crochet, chain two and turn.

  6. Step 6

Stitch the next round by placing a half double crochet in each stitch of the round. Join, chain two and turn. Continue working rounds in this fashion until length of beanie measures 4 1/2 inches. Fasten off and hide the end.

  7. Step 7

Attach the pompom to the top of the beanie with glue or yarn.
