Instructions

  1. Crown

    • 1

Chain 87, make 1 single crochet in the second chain from the hook, and continue with 1 single crochet in each chain to the end of the row. Chain 1, turn and single crochet to the end of the row.

    • 2

Chain one, turn and single crochet the next row. Continue turning and working in single crochet until the piece measures 3-1/2-inches high.

    • 3

Do 6 single crochet, then 1 decrease stitch. To decrease, insert the hook into the next stitch, draw up the loop, insert the hook in the following stitch as well, yarn over and draw the yarn through three loops.

    • 4

Work 8 more single crochet and then 1 decrease stitch. Continue working a pattern of eight single crochet and 1 decrease stitch to the end of the row. You should have a total of 78 stitches at the end of the row.

    • 5

Begin with six single crochet and one decrease stitch, followed by seven single crochet. Work the rest of the row with seven single crochet followed by one decrease stitch. This gives you a total of 70 stitches in the row.

    • 6

Crochet the next seven rows by starting each row with six single crochet, then continuing to decrease the number of single crochet between each decrease stitch by one. After working seven in this way, you end up with a row of 14 stitches.

    • 7

Finish the crown by doing two decrease stitches, a single crochet, and then alternating between a decrease stitch and a single crochet for a total of six stitches. Fasten off, leaving a long piece of yarn. Gather the top stitches together and sew the seam with this yarn.

    Brim

    • 8

Slip stitch to join yarn to the lower edge of the crown with the right side facing you. Work 87 single crochet around the original chain of the crown. End by slip stitching to the beginning chain.

    • 9

Chain one, work two single crochet, then do an increase stitch of two single crochet in the same stitch. Do four single crochet, one increase stitch, and four single crochet. Continue this pattern to the end of the round. End with a slip stitch to the beginning chain of the row. You should have 104 stitches.

    • 10

Make the next round by chaining one and working one single crochet in each stitch. Slip stitch to the beginning chain at the end of the round. Chain one. Make a second round exactly like the one you just completed.

    • 11

Do one increase stitch followed by seven single crochet. Continue this pattern all the way around. Slip stitch to the beginning chain at the end of the round. You should have 117 stitches. Repeat Step 3.

    • 12

Make one increase stitch followed by eight single crochet. Continue this pattern all the way around. Slip stitch to the beginning chain at the end of the round. You should have 130 stitches. Repeat Step 3.

    • 13

Do one increase stitch followed by nine single crochet. Continue this pattern all the way around. Slip stitch to the beginning chain at the end of the round. You should have 143 stitches. Chain one and work one single crochet in each stitch. Slip stitch to the beginning chain at the end of the round. Fasten off to complete your floppy hat.
