Ostriches are the largest living birds in the world. They are native to Africa, parts of the Middle East and on North American farms. Considering their massive stature, it's no wonder that ostriches can't fly. However, ostriches can run quite rapidly with their 4-inch claws. An ostrich's kick contains enough power to kill an adult lion. These factors make ostriches dangerous to anyone it perceives as a threat.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stay at least 50 to 100 yards back if you ever encounter an ostrich. Avoidance prevents the ostrich from viewing you as a possible threat.

  2. Step 2

Increase your distance from the ostrich slowly. Backing away rapidly only draws additional attention to yourself.

  3. Step 3

Remain in one place if the animal begins to chase you. Lie down on the ground and cover your face with your hands. If you act out aggressively, the bird might respond to your aggression by fighting back.

  4. Step 4

Play dead; it's the best way to make an ostrich disinterested. React passively to the ostrich if you come in physical contact or proximity to one.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's important that you remain cautious around farm ostriches as well. Just because they're in a farm environment doesn't mean that they're domesticated animals.
  • Ostriches are attracted to shiny objects such as jewelry. It's best not to wear such objects in their company.
  • Don't run--an ostrich can outrun you. Any sudden movement may cause the ostrich to attack and cause serious injury to you.
