Welding an angled joint is tricky because it's necessary to establish the joint before welding it. There are a few tricks that can help you so that you don't wish you had an extra arm.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use a magnet to help you establish the angle you wish to weld before welding it.

  2. Step 2

Set one piece of metal on the work surface with one edged butted up against the magnet and the other standing with one edged touching the first piece with its back pressed against the metal.

  3. Step 3

Tack weld the two pieces of metal together. Apply the grounding clamp to the edge of the work surface, put on your welding hood and turn on the welder.

  4. Step 4

Apply the tip of the welder to two points on the pieces of metal: on either end on the inside of the angled joint. This will serve to preserve the angle of the pieces of metal when you remove the metal from the magnet.

  5. Step 5

Remove the metal from the magnet, and weld the rest of the angled joint of the two pieces of metal. Because of your tack welds, you won't have to worry about the two pieces of metal falling apart before you can secure them with your MIG welder.
