How to Throw When Skimboarding

Skimboarding, made popular on the shores of California, allows you to glide from the sand to the ocean and back again on a board about half the length and width of a surfboard. Learn to throw your board properly to get the best entry and speed on the wave.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit a relatively flat beach that will give you a long approach to the water. Perfect your timing, learning to run toward the water just as the wave breaks.

  2. Step 2

Run toward the water at about a 45-degree angle and at a steady pace. Running too fast may throw your weight too far forward when you jump onto the board or make you go too fast and lose control.

  3. Step 3

Grip the skimboard with both hands. Place your dominant hand on the bottom of the board and the other about three-quarters of the way up on the other side.

  4. Step 4

Throw the board onto the surface of the shallow water as it begins to recede. Aim for the line where the sand meets the water. Try to make the board land flat so it skims along the surface rather than hitting the water nose first. Try not to hesitate as you throw your board and before you jump onto it, since the hesitation will affect your momentum.

Tips & Warnings
  • Weigh down your wet board by scattering a light layer of sand on the bottom to keep it from blowing away as you're trying to throw it on an extremely windy day. The heavier board will be easier to throw and the sand will come off immediately when it hits the water.
  • Don't just wait for the "perfect wave" to throw your skimboard. Use trial and error to practice your throwing and mounting technique. Typically, though, waves that break closer to the shore are easier for beginning skimboarders to reach. As your skill improves, look for a spot with a steep bank to help you gain momentum on your approach.
