Amplifiers are often expensive, so many band members decide to buy them used from a friend or online. Used amps may be a little beaten up, but with some creativity and a little paint, you can customize them. Learn how to stencil a design on a guitar amplifier and make it a one-of-a-kind piece of equipment.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Choose a pattern for your stencil design. Make sure it's easy to draw--or print from your computer--and easy to cut and spray onto the amp. Choose simple designs like hearts and stars or go a little farther with silhouetted faces or your band name.
Step2
Take the amp apart as much as possible. Cover or remove anything electrical and any parts you don't want accidentally painted.
Step3
Cut out your stencils. Use a craft knife, which is easier to use with small pieces than scissors. Be careful to cut out only what you want to see on the amp. If you have multiple colors, use a stencil for each color, cutting out the pieces that will be painted that color.
Step4
Secure your stencil template to your amp exactly where you want it. Use spray paint to fill in the stencil, being careful not to move the template as you spray. Cover the grates completely.
Step5
Remove the stencil slowly and carefully. Allow the paint to dry fully before removing the stencil. Repeat with any other colors and templates.
Step6
Allow all paint coats to dry completely before putting the amp back together. Leave the one design or add a few to customize the amp.
