How to Get a Job in a UPS Warehouse

When most of us think of a job at United Parcel Service (UPS), we think of delivering packages in that familiar brown truck. But there are many other jobs at UPS. For instance, all those packages that get picked up are unloaded and loaded into trailers for delivery to hub centers. Getting a part-time warehouse job is how many people start their careers at UPS.

  • Meet the criteria required to earn a job in a UPS warehouse: You must be at least 17 years of age, have reliable transportation, have the ability to lift up to 70 lbs. and be able to work 3.5 to 5 hours per weekday, usually either from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. or 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

  • Apply to UPS online. Click on "Job Search." Choose a state and/or ZIP code and find out which warehouse positions are open in your area. Fill out Contact Information and answer all questions. Electronically submit the application.

  • Interview with a human resources representative at the designated time and location. Complete all necessary paperwork including personal information, employment history and references. You may also interview with a station manager or shift supervisor.

  • Pass a company-required physical examination which includes drug testing. Failure to pass a drug test will exempt you from being considered for a warehouse job at UPS.

  • Understand that you will join a local Teamsters union when you are hired for a warehouse job at UPS. All warehouse positions are union jobs. Dues are usually automatically subtracted from an employee's paycheck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Increase your chances of getting a part-time warehouse job at UPS by applying in October. UPS hires additional workers during the busy holiday season, when package pick-up increases substantially.
  • Past employment with another overnight shipping company or warehouse position is not a requirement to get a job in a UPS warehouse.
  • Do not expect to get a job in a UPS warehouse if you fail a drug test, have a serious criminal record or are not able to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job.
