United Parcel Service was founded in 1907 and has grown into a $49.7 billion global corporation, according to the company's website. UPS is the world's largest package delivery service, operating in more than 200 countries. In 2009 Forbes magazine named UPS one of the world's most reputable companies. UPS offers many types of careers, each with specific job requirements.

Package Handler

UPS reports that the majority of its employees begin with the company as a part-time package handler. The position is highly physical and requires lifting of up to 70 pounds, though packages average 25 to 35 pounds. The UPS website notes many of its package handlers are students or adults who are looking for part-time hours with full benefits. Package handlers usually work no more than 20 hours a week and typically do not work on weekends or holidays.

Package Delivery Driver

Package delivery drivers must pass a physical exam and, like package handlers, can expect to lift parcels as heavy as 70 pounds. Because they interact with customers, package delivery drivers need strong customer service skills and should have a polished, neat appearance. All UPS package delivery drivers must have a valid driver's license and the ability to operate a manual (standard) transmission vehicle.

Freight Truckload Full-Time Domestic Driver

Full-time freight truckload domestic drivers transport cargo in a tractor-trailer to two or more locations anywhere in the country. The job demands drivers spend considerable time on the road, often in one-to-three-week stints. These drivers typically pull a 53-foot van trailer. To qualify for this position, a driver must pass a physical exam and a UPS freight road test. Applicants must have a valid and unrestricted Class A commercial drivers’ license with a hazardous materials endorsement. Candidates for this position must be able to read, write and speak English fluently and should be at least 23 years and 6 months old. They are subject to a background test as well as a drug screening.

Freight Full-Time City Driver

UPS freight full-time city drivers pick up and deliver freight for commercial and residential clients on predetermined routes. They must pass a road test and a physical exam. All applicants for this position need an unrestricted, valid Class A commercial drivers' license with twin trailer and hazardous materials endorsements. They must be at least 21 years old, fluent in written and spoken English and able to pass a background check and a drug test. Because they interact with clients, UPS freight full-time city drivers need to have a professional, polished appearance.
