How to Prove Someone Trustworthy

Trust can be given easily, but once it has been broken, it can take years to gain back. There are many reasons for lying or cheating, but the fact that a bond of trust has been broken is tough to recover from. There are ways, however, to prove someone trustworthy, even if their track record doesn't look good.

1. Keep appointments and always be on time. You can prove you are trustworthy to someone by having respect for these little things, and refrain from leaving people waiting when you said you would be there.

2. Commit fully when your word is on the line. Commitments, no matter how big or small, should always be of the utmost importance. Whether you promised her a dance at her sister's wedding, or you promised to quit smoking, you should remain focused on every commitment you make.

3. Be honest. Nothing can ruin a trustworthy character like a lie, big or small. It doesn't matter if the person has caught you in the act, or if you think they could never find out the truth, when asked a direct question, tell the truth.

4. Prove you are trustworthy to someone by keeping their secrets, and not gossiping and telling them another person's secrets. If you are loose lipped with someone else's private information, you can never gain someone's trust with their own.

5. Have integrity, and stand firm on your convictions. Don't tell someone that you don't smoke and then light up at parties. No matter how infrequent your bad behavior is, you should always lay your cards on the table and live up to who you say you are.

6. Stand up for your friends to prove that you are trustworthy. When you have a reputation as a fair weather friend, or the kind of person who stabs his friends in the back, you may never be able to recover from that stigma and be trusted.
